UNITED STATES | TUNGARU PRESS | October 26, 2026

Elon Musk has announced that SpaceX has secured $40 billion in debt financing to purchase advanced computer chips for artificial intelligence, marking another major investment in the rapidly expanding AI industry.

Musk confirmed the financing agreement in a post on his social media platform X on Sunday, October 25, saying the company had completed the deal despite growing concerns about the financial risks associated with large-scale AI infrastructure projects.

The funding will support the purchase of graphics processing units (GPUs), powerful chips used to train and operate artificial intelligence systems.

According to Musk, the equipment is expected to arrive during the first half of 2027.

Musk Confirms Major Financing Agreement

In his announcement, Musk said SpaceX had completed the $40 billion financing arrangement and highlighted the company's financial position.

He described SpaceX as an investment-grade business supported by revenue from its Starlink satellite internet service and rocket launch operations.

In a follow-up statement, Musk explained that the financing primarily involved callable debt, a type of borrowing that can be repaid early under specified conditions.

The GPUs purchased through the arrangement are expected to arrive during the first and second quarters of 2027.

The announcement followed earlier reports that SpaceX had been negotiating with financial institutions and investors to fund a major purchase of Nvidia chips.

Bloomberg reported that Goldman Sachs had been leading discussions with investors, including Apollo Global Management.

According to that reporting, the proposed arrangement involved a special-purpose financing vehicle designed to keep the borrowing separate from SpaceX's main balance sheet.

Musk's announcement indicates that the company has now secured the financing, although the full terms of the completed agreement have not been publicly detailed in the information provided.

SpaceX Expands Into Artificial Intelligence

SpaceX has expanded its artificial intelligence operations significantly during 2026, developing a business segment it calls Super Intelligence (SI).

The company's AI activities have become an increasingly important part of its business.

According to its latest earnings release, the Super Intelligence division generated $7.56 billion in third-quarter revenue, compared with $813 million during the same period a year earlier.

That represents an increase of more than nine times.

The expansion reflects growing demand for advanced computing systems capable of supporting increasingly complex AI models.

GPUs are particularly important because they can process large amounts of information simultaneously, making them essential for training and operating modern AI systems.

Musk Warns of Financial Pressure on AI Companies

Despite SpaceX's financing success, Musk warned that other businesses in the AI infrastructure sector could face serious financial difficulties.

He said debt markets had become increasingly difficult for companies that depend heavily on AI data centre operations without having substantial revenue from other businesses.

Musk predicted that more than 200 companies known as neocloud providers could face widespread failures or consolidation.

Neocloud companies specialise in providing computing infrastructure for artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Unlike larger technology businesses with multiple revenue streams, many smaller providers rely heavily on borrowing to purchase expensive GPUs and build data centres.

Musk suggested that only a limited number of these companies would survive as financing conditions become more restrictive.

His comments reflect concerns about whether the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure can continue at its current pace.

AI Investment Requires Enormous Capital

The $40 billion financing agreement illustrates the scale of investment required to compete in artificial intelligence.

Technology companies are spending billions of dollars on advanced processors, data centres and supporting infrastructure as demand for AI services continues to grow.

However, these investments also carry financial risks.

Businesses must generate enough revenue from their computing operations to cover equipment costs, borrowing expenses and ongoing maintenance.

For SpaceX, its existing satellite internet and launch businesses provide additional revenue sources that Musk says support the company's financial standing.

Smaller AI infrastructure providers may not have the same financial flexibility.

What Comes Next for SpaceX?

With financing secured, SpaceX is preparing to receive the new GPUs during the first half of 2027.

The equipment is expected to support the company's growing artificial intelligence operations as it expands beyond its established space launch and satellite communications businesses.

The announcement also places SpaceX among the companies making exceptionally large investments in AI computing infrastructure.

However, the longer-term financial returns from these investments remain uncertain.

For Musk, the $40 billion agreement represents a major step in SpaceX's AI expansion. For the wider industry, his warning about potential company failures highlights the financial pressure building behind the artificial intelligence boom.
