BUTARITARI, October 12, 2026 (BPA NEWS) — Improving shipping services and strengthening economic resilience across Pacific island countries are the key priorities of the 12th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Central Pacific Shipping Commission (CPSC), being held on Butaritari Island.

In his opening remarks, CPSC Chair, Kiribati Transport Minister and Butaritari MP Alexander Teabo said shipping was a lifeline for Pacific communities, delivering essential supplies such as food, fuel, construction materials and medicines while connecting businesses to regional and international markets.

“For us, shipping is not simply another mode of transport, it is our lifeline,” he said.

Under the theme of turning data into decisions and strengthening economic resilience, the meeting will review shipping schedules, operational reports and the performance of licensed shipping operators to identify service gaps and develop practical solutions.

The Chair said the Commission needed to use shipping data effectively to make informed decisions that improve the reliability, affordability and sustainability of services across member countries.

He also highlighted the importance of regional cooperation, noting that the geographical isolation of Pacific islands and the high cost of maintaining shipping services made it difficult for individual countries to address these challenges alone.

The meeting will also consider the CPSC dashboard and performance analysis tools to help identify shipping trends, improve decision-making and strengthen connectivity across the region.

The Chair encouraged commissioners, technical committee members, the Secretariat and shipping operators to engage constructively in discussions aimed at improving services for Pacific communities.

He thanked Kiribati President Taneti Maamau for attending the opening ceremony on Butaritari, saying his presence demonstrated the government’s support for the Commission. He also acknowledged Tinian Reiher and others who helped prepare for the meeting.

The 12th AGM brings together CPSC member representatives to review shipping performance and work towards practical improvements in regional connectivity, trade and access to essential goods.
