The Kiribati Kiritimati Infrastructure Project (KKIP) has taken a significant step forward following the signing of a major consultancy contract to oversee the design and construction supervision of essential airport and road infrastructure upgrades on Kiritimati Island.

The Ministry of Line and Phoenix Islands Development (MLPID) confirmed that the Design and Construction Supervision Consultant (DSC) agreement was officially signed on October 1, 2026, with project mobilisation expected to begin later in the month.

The contract was awarded to New Zealand-based engineering and consulting firm BECA, which will be responsible for undertaking the project's crucial design and construction supervision work.

The appointment represents an important milestone in preparations for major infrastructure improvements aimed at strengthening transport services and accessibility across Kiritimati.

Under the project timeline, the design phase will establish the technical requirements and groundwork needed before contractors are selected in 2027 to begin implementing the planned upgrades.

The proposed improvements will focus on enhancing aviation facilities and road networks, with particular attention to improving transport safety, infrastructure resilience and connectivity.

Once completed, the upgrades are expected to provide safer and more reliable transportation facilities for residents, businesses and visitors while strengthening Kiritimati's connections with the rest of Kiribati.

The improvements are also anticipated to support long-term economic opportunities and contribute to the island's sustainable development.

Funded by the World Bank and implemented under the leadership of MLPID, the Kiribati Kiritimati Infrastructure Project is a major government initiative focused on modernising essential infrastructure and addressing transport challenges on Kiritimati Island.

The latest contract signing marks another important stage in the project's development as Kiribati continues efforts to improve critical infrastructure and strengthen connectivity throughout the country.
