CHRISTMAS ISLAND, October 7, 2026 (BPA NEWS) —– The Kiribati Kiritimati Infrastructure Project (KKIP) has reached a major milestone with the signing of a contract for the design and construction supervision of key aviation and road improvements on Kiritimati Island.

The Ministry of Line and Phoenix Islands Development (MLPID) said the Design and Construction Supervision Consultant (DSC) contract was signed on October 1 and is expected to mobilize this month.

The contract has been awarded to New Zealand-based consulting company BECA, which will begin the critical design phase of the project.

The design work will pave the way for the procurement of contractors in 2027 to carry out major improvements to airport and road infrastructure on Kiritimati.

The upgrades are expected to improve safety, resilience and connectivity on Kiritimati and contribute to stronger connectivity across Kiribati.

The KKIP is a major World Bank-funded initiative led by MLPID to improve critical infrastructure and support sustainable development on Kiritimati Island.
